UNPKF, IPKF and the cunningness of The Hindu !

When the Eelam issue was engaging the attention of the world, the world-wide opinion was to send the United Nation's Peace Keeping Force to Sri Lanka. But, Sri Lanka was resisting it, calling its genocidal actions as its internal affairs.

Mr. Karunanithi advocated sending UNPKF to Sri Lanka. Mr. Cho also was positive of that demand. He wanted Jayawardane to be convinced by the Indian Government (Thuklak - 01.10.1985).

The Hindu had said Tigers were not terrorists!

“The second point concerns  the bogey of  ‘terrorism’ which Colombo imagines it can use in a bid to place India on the defensive. Since the very use of the term ‘terrorist’ tends to pre-empt the argument it must be clarified that the phenomenon of  militancy among the Lankan Tamil youth is primarily a political phenomenon, reflecting the maturing of the crisis. When progress along the constitutional lines becomes blocked, when normal and legitimate political expectations are repeatedly frustrated, when it appears that there is no solution within the rules of the game, historical experience demonstrates it is a situation tailor-made, for the development of militancy, including that part of it which takes recourse to non-peaceful methods”. (The Hindu 07.07.1984)

Tamil struggle commenced through Gandhian way!

“Demanding equal rights, the Tamils  (of Sri Lanka) have started their struggle in the Gandhian way against the provisions of the new constitution which have rendered them as second class citizens

-Editorial in Dinamani, a sister newspaper of
the Indian Express, Oct.20, 1972.

Indira Gandhi said it was Genocide !

What is going on in Sri Lanka perfectly fits into the UN definition of the term ‘genocide’. The former Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi knew it  very well. She had in the statement made in the Rajya Sabha on 16.8.83, characterized the Sri Lankan episode as ‘genocide’. “We have and we do condemn genocide, harassment of and injustice to the Tamils of Sri Lanka”, she said.

Rajiv Gandhi said it was Genocide!

Mr. Rajiv Gandhi had also, on 26.2.86, said that the Sri Lankan “killings had all the elements of genocide”. “Dealing with the terrorists is one thing but spraying bullets on innocent farm-workers is quite another thing”, he added (Indian Express. Feb.27, 1986).When the statement created a furore in Sri Lanka, the Indian Government “asserted” that its statement was “judicious, well-intentioned and well-informed”(Indian Express March 3, 1986).

Mr. Rajiv  Gandhi had, while voicing India’s  “concern and disquiet” over the killings of Tamils of Sri Lanka, said, “It is one thing to deal terrorists. But, it is quite another to victimize large segments of population only because they belong to a particular ethnic group” (Indian Express Dec.25, 1985).

Shiv Shankar said it was State Terrorism

The External Affairs minister Mr. P. Shiv shankar, today called upon the Sri Lanka Government to “show their bonafides” by putting an end to “state terrorism” on the ethnic minorities in that country’’.-Indian Express, June 2, 1986.

India said Lankan army was anti-Tamil!

India had also told the UN Commission on Human Rights that the Sri Lankan security forces were “victimizing the entire community of Tamils”(Indian Express. March 12, 1986). Referring to the authenticity of reports on human rights violations in Sri Lanka, India said that they were based on “incontrovertible evidences collected by objective international observers”.

The persistent action of the Sri Lankan government in carpet bombing, strafing and shelling of Tamil areas would speak for themselves. That the Indian Government has not resorted to that kind of action in Kashmir in spite of the assistance rendered by another sovereign government Pakistan is in sharp contrast to the genocidal propensity of the Sinhalese government.

The Hindu publicised the secret plan of Genocide!

The Hindu, in its editorial on April 25,1987 said that “The time of troubles for the Tamil people of Sri Lanka has entered a dangerous new phase with the state carrying out a series of barbarous ‘punitive’ strikes from the air against innocent civilians residing in the North and the East- the traditional Tamil areas which have been treated, by official policy and for ‘reasons of state’, as enemy territory…it is…unleashing the punitive resources of the state’s armed forces against targets that no one in possession of commonsense would recognize as ‘terrorist’…targets”.

IPKF under Jayawardane's command !

But, things went the Aryan way. The UNPKF was not sent. The MEA minions conspired to send IPKF and, what is more, placed the sovereign army at the disposal and command of a foreigner, Jayawardane. It was a matter of shame and Rajiv Gandhi and the MEA bureaucrats ran for cover when asked question on this treasonable activity, pointedly.

Indian media turned a turncoat and tried to cover up the atrocities of Indian soldiers on Eelam soil !

If they had been truthful, the unruly behaviour could have been  controlled, just administratively. But, the media did not care. It turned anti-Tamils. Facts were suppressed and a new era of uncivilised behaviour in Indian journalistic field was heralded in, led by The Hindu.

My Lai, Chechenya and Eelam

It is not necessary for a media and the public of a nation to justify or cover-up the atrocities committed by its army in a foreign soil, to prove their patriotism. Right or wrong, the facts must be reported by journalists. " or Wrong, My Country" is the theory of cannibals.

The My Lai massacres committed by the US army, as  reported by Seymour Hersh were reported in more than 20 newspapers of USA simultaneously.

Anna Politkovskaya, the Russian investigative journalist, famous for her coverage of human rights abuses by the Russian government in Chechnya. She was assassinated in 2006 outside her Moscow apartment. . Her "fearless reporting is believed to be the reason for her murder, however six years later, investigations are still ongoing". What is to be noted is that the Russian government did not accuse her of lack of patriotism.

But, the Indian media, chose to cover up the inhuman acts of the soldiers of the IPKF and that emboldened those soldiers even more to indulge in rape and murder of innocent Tamils in Eelam.

IPKF atrocities well-documented, reported The Hindu

Punjab and Eelam

In regard to the atrocities committed on Sikhs by the Indian army men, Kushwant Singh could expose the truth and it was published in Indian Express too. But, the entire Indian media turned pro-Sinhalese and blacked out the black deeds of the IPKF soldiers on the Eelam soil.

Kushwant Singh wrote with graphic details in the Indian Express how the Indian Army committed atrocities against Sikhs and how government agencies spread lies and canard to cover up those misdeeds. (Details in separate article).  He wrote;

"The sustained propaganda of falsehood yielded dividends. It came to be generally accepted that those who accepted the government point of view were patriots: those who did not were communally biased, supporters of  Bhindranwale, Khalistanis and traitors”(Indian Express, Sunday, October 21,1984)

Given these facts, one could understand how much atrocities would have been committed by the army men of the IPKF on a foreign soil, when they knew that the Indian media was there to cover up all their crimes against humanity.

Rajiv became victim to the anti-Tamil activities of the MEA and the IPKF

Yet, even after the Rajiv's death, the cunning newspaper , The Hindu, did not choose to go by professional ethics. It wanted to cover up and whitewash the inhuman crimes of the IPKF men on Lankan Tamil women. The Hindu never gave respect to the universal rule that the army should not loot and rape in the area of enemy. This newspaper was all out to ensure that the Indian public do not come to know about the extent to which the IPKF men indulged in rape and loot on Eelam soil.

Its loaded comments added by it to the statement given by the woman after the murder of Rajiv Gandhi would testify to the cunningness of The Hindu and the uncivilised nature of Indian journalism.

The Hindu did not bother about the gang-rape of Tamil woman by the IPKF men.

It did not want or wait for an investigation on that allegation.
It just inserted a sentence in a hurry to ensure that that statement of Tamil woman does not make the Tamils to think.

Because, for The Hindu, we the Tamils are not 'their' people.

So, anything done to us is immaterial, for this predatory newspaper.

BBC shows the way for civilised journalism

During the war between Britain and Argentina, the BBC telecast the reports of not only the Government of the UK but also the report of the Government of Argentina.

When it was opposed by the rulers on the grounds of patriotism, "the BBC Chairman, George Howard – who had been appointed on the recommendation of Mrs Thatcher – made a speech defending the BBC and insisting that the Corporation was determined “that in war, truth shall not be the first casualty”......…

The BBC’s Managing Director of Radio, Richard Francis, added to the discontent.

On 11 May, in a speech in Madrid to journalists from around the world, he said: “It is not the BBC’s role to boost British troops’ morale or to rally British people to the flag...The widow in Portsmouth is no different from the widow of Buenos Aires...The BBC needs no lessons in patriotism from the present British Government or any other.”

Dear Readers,

If your intention is to see a civilised world, the corrupt, cunning, cannibalistic and partisan media, like The Hindu mud be exposed before the public. These newspapers do not pave way for a society based on justice and fair play in public life.
